The term ‘Bandhej’ or 'Bandhani' is derived from the word 'Bandhan' that means tying up. An ancient art practiced mainly in the state of Rajasthan. The history of Bandhej or tie and dye can be backdated to pre-historic times, as countless dyers through the ages have experimented with the use of bindings to create patterns on cloth immersed in vats of dye. The art of using bandhej includes tying a cloth with millions of tiny knots and then immersing the cloth in various colors to dye it such that when the cloth is dried later and the knots are removed, this technique creates amazing patterns on the fabrics like Leheriya, Mothra, Ekdali and Shikari. A colorful tradition, Bandhej that is been around for so many years is now the identity of the exuberant culture of Rajasthan. What is essential in bandhni is the minute and skillful manipulation of the fingers for tying, extensive knowledge of color schemes and skill in dyeing materials. It is for this reason that it takes several years for a craftsman to perfect this skill. The main colours used in Bandhani are yellow, red, blue, green and black.
